An airborne multi-functional hazard monitoring radar system is proposed to alert pilots about potential aviation hazards using an X-band array system. The system will implement both hydrometeors and wind hazard detection techniques, which are designed to assist pilots to monitor weather and air-traffic hazard in real-time, and set up a safe route to avoid them. In this preliminary study, knowledge about hydrometeor hazards scattering is explored. Scattering measurements of man-made and natural hydrometeors have been performed to validate physical models. T-matrix-based, mixed phase hydrometeor scattering models are developed and incorporated in advanced airborne sensing simulations. A simulated scenario with aircraft flying through hazardous storm region is demonstrated.
